Overcoming Tentative Performances
In “Sessions with Doc,” Dr. Patrick Cohn answers your sports psychology and mental training questions about overcoming tentative performances for athletes.
Athletes have played tremendously well when they’re comfortable in their environment with their regular team but then you put them on a travel team or on unfamiliar teams, they tend to play very tentatively and lose confidence.
I’m Dr. Patrick Cohn and I’m going to answer a question from David about how his son plays super tentatively when he’s in an uncomfortable environment and how we can make him feel more confident and more comfortable in that uncomfortable environment.
Here’s the question Dr. Cohn answers this week about overcoming tentative performance for athletes.
DAVID ASKS: “My son plays baseball. When he’s comfortable in an environment, such as playing with his regular team, he shines, but we have tried out for other teams and when he doesn’t know the other people on the team, he tends to struggle to perform, especially at bat when he normally does. How do I maintain his confidence in any situation?”

Instilling Confidence in Baseball And Softball Players
Confidence, more than any other mental game attribute, is vital for your team’s success. If your players have it and know how to keep it, they maximize their success. Your team cannot reach their full potential unless each player can harness the power of stable and enduring self-confidence–so your team can perform as a confident team.
Your players might possess a ton of physical talent, have great coaching, and train harder or practice more than anyone else in your league, but if they do not have the self-confidence to match, your team can’t utilize this talent.
“Instilling Confidence in Baseball and Softball Players” program consists of one 72-minute audio CD that includes 7 days of confidence-fueling exercises. You’ll also receive a simple-to-follow 74-page coaches’ manual that guides you through the 7 team session you’ll conduct!
